Choosing theroofing is as important as building the foundation for a home. Whether you arechoosing a roof for a new home or building, or thinking of changing the roof ofan existing structure, you will need to consider many things. The type of roofyou choose not only affects your building’s appearance, function, andmaintenance cost, it also affects the level of security, stability, andprotection that your home has.

In general, there are two types of roofs you can choose from – flat roof, and pitched roof. The following information helps you understand the type of roof to purchase.

Types of roofs

Flat Roof: A flat roof isalso called a level roof, because it is at the level of the buildingstructure’s height. Being flat doesn’t mean that the roof will not have fallsto run off rainwater from the sides.

Flat roofs dohave falls but it is not as prominent as pitched roofs. In contract, pitchedroofs have slopes that ensure no water is retained on the roof-top.

Flat roofs arecommon in regions with warmer climates. They are also easier to construct. Flatroof construction is generally done with RCC and is expensive in India comparedto truss roofs.

The flat roofsare prone to water leakage if they aren’t waterproofed properly. Moreover, theconcrete transfers heat.

Pitched Roof: Unlike flatroofs, pitched roofs have slopes of more than 10 degrees. However, theacuteness of the slope is determined based on a variety of factors.

The downwardslopes are generally of two parts, each part starting from central ridges. However, depending on the roof design, they can be single part roofs as well.

There are manytypes of pitched roofs, such as mono pitch roof, couple roof, closed coupleroof, collar roof, and purlin roof, truss (large section), and trussed rafter. Plainor interlocking tiles, felt, slates, and battens are the common materials usedto manufacture pitched roofs.

Pitched roofsare often used in regions that experience high snowfall, ice formation, rainfall, and winds. Roofing tiles and slates used in pitched roofs areresistant to externalities such as water, fire, snow, and ice. It has nowbecome increasingly common to see solar panels fit and integrated into pitchedroofs.

Advantages of flat roof

Flat roofs havecompact design. They are a viable alternative for commercial establishments, homes, and garages.

-         Although flat roofs don’t havea slope, it avoids a need of false ceiling inside the house for light fixtures.

-         A building’s height will notincrease with a flat roof. So, those who want a taller building can use a flatroof.

-         Versatility – Flat roofs canhave roof-top balconies, gardens, and even smaller roofed structures forleisure and relaxation.

-         Flat roofs facilitate verticalextension of the building – it is easier to construct upper floors, whereaspitched roof must be dismantled making the process complicated.

Advantages of pitched roof

-         Pitched roofs have timelessappeal. They look elegant and give the home a distinct appearance. Slopedpitched roofs are often used in combination with flat roofs to create hybriddesigns.

-         Pitched roofs can be constructedsuch that they provide room for creating lofts – which are habitable areasdirectly under the roof. This area can also be used as an attic.

-         Pitched roofs are used inregions with heavy or moderately high rainfall. The sloped design of the roofsensures that rainwater safely drains away. There is no scope for waterstagnation atop the roof.

-        Pitched roofs are considered tohave higher longevity. This is because the materials used in construction aredurable and resistant.

Pitched roofs vs. flat roofs

A pitched roofprovides for better aesthetics. A flat roof can make for taller buildings, andis suitable for warm environments. Nevertheless, both types of roofs have theiradvantages and disadvantages. It all comes down to personal preference, the typeof building, budget, environment, and long-term goals.
