The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy hasreached a historic milestone in the Renewable Energy sector in the financialyear 2024-25, with the country adding an unprecedented 25 GW of renewableenergy capacity, which is about 35 per cent more than last year’s growth of18.57 GW.

India's solar energy sector led the renewableenergy growth, with capacity growth up from 15 GW in FY24 to nearly 21 GW inFY25, a remarkable 38 per cent increase. The country also reached a significantmilestone of exceeding 100 GW installed solar capacity this year.

In a strong move towards self-sufficiency, India'ssolar module generation capacity almost doubled from 38 GW in March 2024 to 74GW in March 2025, while solar PV cell generation capacity increased from 9.0 GWto 25 GW. In addition, the country's first ingot-wafer production facility (2.0GW) began production in FY25.

The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Free ElectricityScheme saw impressive progress, benefiting more than 11.01 lakh families tillMarch 31, 2020. Under the scheme, INR 5,437.20-crore has been disbursed ascentral financial assistance to 6.98 lakh beneficiaries, which has given asignificant boost to the adoption of rooftop solar.

Accelerating the greenhydrogen sector

India’s green hydrogen sector also saw significantgrowth. An incentive of INR 2,220-crore was given for the annual production of1,500 MW of electrolyzers, while an additional INR 2,239-crore was given forthe production of 450,000 tonnes per year (TPA) of green hydrogen.

Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, INR 454-crorewas allocated to seven pilot projects to make the steel sector carbon-free. Inaddition, 37 hydrogen-fuelled vehicles and nine hydrogen refueling stationswill be commissioned in five pilot projects in the transport sector funded at acost of INR 208-crore.
