Union Cabinet approves second phase of Chennai Metro rail project comprising three corridors
The UnionCabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has approved theproposal put forward by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development for theChennai Metro Rail Project Phase-II comprising three corridors. The totallength of the sanctioned railway lines will be 118.9km, and there will be 128stations on this line.
For thisproject, the expenditure is expected to be INR 63,246-crore, which is plannedto be completed by 2027. Once Phase-II is fully operational, the city ofChennai will have a total metro network of 173 km.
The Phase IIproject includes the following three corridors:
Corridor-(i): Madhavaram toSIPCOT, 45.8 km long route with 50 locations.
Corridor-(ii): Lighthouseto Poonamalle Bypass, a 26.1 km long route with 30 points.
Corridor-(iii): Madhavaramto Sholinganallur, a 47 km long route with 48 stops.
Once Phase-II isfully operational, the city of Chennai will have a total metro rail network of173km.
