ShyamMetalics and Energy Limited (SMEL) has announced the expansion of its railinfrastructure at its integrated steel plant located in village Pandloi nearRengali, Sambalpur district, Odisha. SMEL’s integrated steel plant, which alsoincludes a coal washery and power plant, has witnessed significant growth inrecent years. To meet the demands of this expanded capacity, the company hasidentified the need to improve its rail infrastructure for efficient handlingof incoming raw materials and outgoing finished goods.
Previously,the plant operated with two dedicated railway lines for managing raw materialintake and finished goods dispatch. As part of the expansion plan, completed in2023, SMEL has increased the number of lines to four. This includes a lead linebranching off from Rengali station, along with three branch lines and an engineescape line.
Thisupgraded infrastructure, approved by the Indian Railway through a DPR (DetailedProject Report) in 2015, is now fully operational with overhead electrificationcompleted and commissioned. This Expansion will facilitate our plant to handlemore than 110 Rakes in a month.
“Tofully realize the plant's potential and improve operational efficiency, SMELplans to introduce a wagon tippler by 2028. This critical addition willstreamline rail operations, facilitating faster turnaround times, andincreasing rail handling capacity by 100 per cent,” says Brij Bhushan Agarwal,Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd.
