ABB’s Baldor-Reliance® Cooling Tower Direct Drive(CTDD) reduces energy usage and maintenance costs for Marriott Hotel in Pune.
-
The CTDD replaces the gearbox, driveshaft, andinduction motor typically used to drive cooling tower fans.

With a return on investment in less than twoyears, the solution ensures quieter and maintenance-free operation as comparedto the conventional motor-gearbox systems.
Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) consume an average ofabout 50 per cent of the energy in buildings. By installing ABB’s Cooling TowerDirect Drive solution in its hotel, JW Marriott Pune, has set new benchmarks inenergy efficiency, saving about 35 per cent energy annually. Energy saved in aday with ABB's direct drive solution can charge an electric car to run forapproximately 1,500 km.
A cooling tower is a key component of many refrigeration systems and canbe used to provide comfort cooling for large commercial buildings likeairports, schools, hospitals, and hotels. Energy is consumed in driving thefan, or fans, necessary to achieve proper air movement through a cooling tower.
ABB’s direct drive solution offers the benefits of variable speed controland eliminates the cost and maintenance required for traditional gearboxes orbelted solutions. The fan couples directly to the motor and is controlled by aunique AC drive to provide optimal speed and cooling tower performance thatruns quieter with reduced energy consumption. The solution also provides aQuick Start Assistant, making start-up simple and straightforward.
“When we aim to reduce energy consumption, every possible way to conserveenergy must be evaluated, and the most energy-efficient technologies andpractices must be implemented. Buildingsoffer huge scope in energy optimization and have a great potential in shapingour sustainable future. Investing in energy-efficient technologies can bringboth economic and environmental benefits,” said Sanjeev Arora, President,Motion business, ABB India.
“Sustainability has always been an integral part of our operations, andour goal has been to help customers in extracting greater value from the energythey use,” he added.
