Blowing Hot and Cold
Cold In-situ recycling using foamed bitumen with Wirtgen Recycler WR240 saved the day during a periodical renewal of an important highway in Kerala.

Cold-in-place Recycling (CIPR) is a method of reconstructing any flexible pavement where the need arises from structural failures. Cold-in-place recycling is used to restore and reuse the existing material reducing the amount of outside material required to be hauled to the site. This efficiently improves the road surface and strength while minimizing expenses typically incurred during the paving process.

In addition, CIPR can correct deep asphalt defects, such as rutting, fatigue (alligator) cracking, and utility cuts that cannot be addressed by a surface treatment or an overlay, and allows minor corrections to the profile of a road surface, and reduces reflective cracking. Needless to say, it results in a minor inconvenience to traffic.

As its name implies, this is a cold process that requires minimal additional heat during the rejuvenation of the asphalt material, resulting in a decrease in the amount of energy required to produce the final material.

The use of this method was used during the Periodical Renewal (PR) From KM 406/000 to 428/000 on NH66 (Old NH47) in the State of Kerala (Alapuzha to Ambalapuzha). Its first Cold in-situ recycling using foamed Bitumen project was taken up by the Kerala state PWD department. The NH66 is a very fast, high traffic volume road connecting Ambalapuzha to Cochin, which is frequented by tourists.

The contract length of the road was 22 kms (~154000 sq m). The EPC Contractor for the `31.11-cr project was M/s EKK Infrastructure Pvt Ltd., who turned to Wirtgen Group for suitable solutions.
