The city of Jaipur in Rajasthan has a rich architecturalvalue which is emerging into modern context in the present scenario. The duplexbungalow for the client, Ashok Jangid has been designed keeping in mind theintensive solar heat gain and hot winds of Rajasthan.
The site for this project lies in outerperipheral highway and far from the hustle and bustle of the city with somelush green surroundings.
The duplex courts are placed inside the livingarea to function the stack effect providing a cool breeze air circulation inthe entire bungalow. The triple height entrance foyer welcomes the residentswith a view of landscaped garden in one side and the holy temple chants on theother.
A large glass facade in the north allowsindirect light on the indoor living area. A series of long balconies aredesigned in the facade, a composition of rectangles and squares in variousproportions. The overall facade continues the same theme, with various elementsfirst being designed as a composition of horizontal and vertical rectangles and,then, given contrasting material finishes. Stone, Grey Paint, and ExposedConcrete are chosen for their longevity and colour.
This 12-room residence for a family of two generationsis designed as per the client’s lifestyle and spatial requirements maintaininga functional and visual balance. An informal lounge area is provided having theliving area on one side and staircase and dining area on the other side. Thestaircase is planned in between both the spaces of double-heighted volumesallowing a pleasant amount of daylight.
In terms of material selection, the localresources were given the priority and local clay tiles, typical Rajasthani Jaalisare used in façade and interiors. To minimize dependency on electricity, solarpanels with water heaters are provided.
The interiors are finished in different tones ofbold colours. Indian inspired motifs extracted from wood, fabric, and stonesare there on the living hall walls.
On the first floor, a triple height lobbyopening onto the landscaped garden makes a relaxing space for evening dining. Thewalls are raised to avoid any unsightly views and the only thing that can beseen is the sky.
